Children are ready for a booster once they outgrow the height or weight limit of their forward-facing harnessed seat—typically between 5 and 7 years old—and can sit upright the entire ride.

Use the Checklist for Seat Belt Fit
If the answer for any of these questions is no, the child should continue riding in a booster seat in that seating position.
Can sit with their back flat against the vehicle seat?
Can the child keep their knees naturally bent over the edge of the vehicle without slouching?
Can the child keep their feet flat on the floor?
Does the lap belt lie snugly across the upper thighs, low on the hips, not the stomach?
Does the shoulder belt lie snugly across the shoulder and chest, not across the neck or face?
Is the child able to stay in position for the entire ride?
Probably! It depends on how the seat belt fits—not just their age.

Keep children riding rear-facing as long as possible. It’s the best way to keep him or her safe. Children should remain in a rear-facing car seat until they reach the maximum height or weight limit allowed by their car seat's manufacturer. Once children outgrow the rear-facing car seat, they are ready to travel in a forward-facing car seat with a harness and tether.
